Controlling Demand

What is Demand?

Demand is the maximum amount of power, in kilowatts (kW), that is used in any 30 minute period throughout the month.  All power bills using more than 50 kW in the TVA region receive this kW charge which can amount to 1/3 to 1/2 of the bill.  These charges will vary based upon the rate schedules offered by your utility.

Why are Time-of-Use (TOU) Rates Important?

TOU rates segregate power usage into Peak and Off-Peak periods.  Peak periods are charged a premium and Off-Peak periods are granted a significant discount.  The key is to spread out the load by reducing the demand peaks without degrading service.  Our demand controllers achieve this by limiting operation of certain, non-critical, equipment when the demand cap is reached during Peak periods.  Equipment runs at will during Off-Peak periods to take advantage of the lower rate.

How  We Control Demand

UtilEcon Services now offers a program that analyzes your power usage, installs demand control equipment and shares in the savings with you to recover the cost of the project.  No, up front investment is required and the savings are guaranteed.  Here's how we do it:

> 12 months of electrical billing history is reviewed to assess the demand profile and determine the impact of HVAC loads.
 ..
> One-line electrical drawings are reviewed, if available.  We may survey electrical rooms and HVAC equipment  to quantify larger loads.
> Billing and equipment information is analyzed and, if economically sound, a proposal is prepared showing project costs and guaranteed savings.
> Upon acceptance of our proposal, we gather additional equipment specifications and proceed with the installation and programming of the demand controller using a licensed electrician.
